Should OPay Be Held Responsible for Customers’ Betting Payments?
Should a payment platform be blamed for how customers spend their money? The debate has grown as fintech apps make it easier to fund betting accounts and other online services. Gambling addiction is a real concern for many young Nigerians. Faster payments can reduce the pause between the urge to bet and placing a stake. However, OPay is a payment provider, not a betting company. The same service is used for school fees, airtime, family transfers, shopping, travel and religious offerings. If banks and card issuers are not held responsible for every product or service a customer buys, should fintech platforms be treated differently because a transaction involves betting? Or should they introduce stronger safeguards for users showing signs of harmful gambling?
