Gombe PDP Holds Court-Ordered Fresh Governorship Primary as Pantami’s Eligibility Sparks Dispute
The Nyesom Wike-backed faction of the Peoples Democratic Party in Gombe held a fresh governorship primary on September 29 after a Federal High Court nullified the earlier exercise that produced former Communications Minister Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami. Pantami, Usman Aliyu Garry and Khamisu Ahmed Mailantarki were cleared for the repeat primary. The court had ruled that the earlier process did not comply with party rules and electoral provisions, and ordered a new primary within 30 days. Garry opposed Pantami’s participation, arguing that Pantami joined the PDP after the list of aspirants had been submitted to INEC. Mailantarki, however, called for a transparent contest and urged party members to accept the eventual outcome. INEC confirmed that it would monitor the primary. The dispute has renewed attention on party membership rules and nomination procedures ahead of the 2027 elections.
