Aba’s Resilience: The Post-War Enterprise That Built a Commercial Hub
Aba’s commercial strength tells a wider story of Igbo resilience, enterprise and community-led development after the Nigerian Civil War. After 1970, many families returned to devastated communities and began rebuilding. Traders reopened shops, artisans returned to their crafts, and entrepreneurs started again with limited resources. Private enterprise, family support, apprenticeship and the Igba Boi tradition helped revive businesses and expand markets. Aba, Nnewi and Onitsha grew into important commercial centres through the efforts of ordinary people who invested, traded and created opportunities. Their growth shows how determination and local initiative can transform communities. These cities still need better roads, drainage, sanitation, traffic management and urban planning. But Aba’s growth remains a powerful reminder that development is built through enterprise, discipline and a refusal to give up.
