Truck Loses Brake, Kills Policewoman and Bystander in Gombe
A loaded grains truck reportedly suffered brake failure and veered off the Gombe-Yola Federal Highway on May 20, crashing into roadside shops at New Mile 3 Market. The collision killed Woman Police Constable Sharifa Gaina and an unidentified pedestrian, and injured two others, including the driver. The Gombe State Police Command confirmed that the DAF truck first hit motorcycles and passersby before ploughing into several shops. Eyewitnesses said the vehicle was entering a filling station on a one-way access when the brakes failed, leaving the driver unable to control the heavy load. Police spokesperson DSP Buhari Abdullahi urged motorists to maintain their vehicles and obey road safety rules. Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya described the crash as heartbreaking, extended condolences to the families, and called for stricter traffic enforcement to prevent similar tragedies.
