Lagos to Reconstruct Alaba Market Roads After Drainage Project Is Completed

Lagos Deputy Governor Kadri Hamzat says roads within Alaba International Market will be reconstructed and expanded after the ongoing drainage project is completed. Hamzat said the drainage work is about 70 per cent complete and must be finished first to improve water flow and prevent flooding from damaging new roads. He said the planned road network will support the market’s growing commercial activities and improve movement for traders and customers. Market leaders welcomed the assurance but urged the state government to speed up delivery of motorable roads. They said better infrastructure is essential to making Alaba cleaner, safer and more competitive as a major electronics hub.

Finishing drainage before rebuilding the roads makes sense, especially if improved water flow is the main goal.

Seventy per cent complete sounds encouraging, but road expansion should not become another promise that waits indefinitely after drainage.

The authorities should clearly phase the remaining work so traders can plan around access disruptions while drainage and roads are completed.
