Enugu Rescues Teenager After Alleged Abuse and Public Banishment in Nenwe
The Enugu State Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development has rescued a 16-year-old girl who was publicly banished from Nenwe community after allegations of abuse involving her father. A viral video showed the teenager and her father being marched out of the community by local elders while wearing palm fronds, a symbol associated with abomination in Igbo tradition. The ministry has moved the girl to a safe shelter, while security agencies search for the father. The commissioner said the teenager will receive medical attention and psychosocial support. She stressed that a child should never be blamed, rejected or punished for abuse committed against them.
