ICPC’s Fake Agency Discovery Exposes Gaps in Federal Oversight

ICPC’s Fake Agency Discovery Exposes Gaps in Federal Oversight

The discovery of another alleged fake government agency operating from a federal building in Abuja has renewed concerns about oversight and accountability in Nigeria’s public service. The ICPC said the National Brands Development and Made-in-Nigeria Special Project Office was unauthorised, prompting President Bola Tinubu to order an arrest and suspend three permanent secretaries in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The case emerged during an investigation into the disputed Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, which reportedly operated from the Federal Secretariat for about two years before it was disowned by the Presidency. The council was also said to have sought a ₦1.3 billion budgetary allocation. Governance experts say the cases point to weak verification systems, poor inter-agency coordination and inadequate accountability. They warn that government-sounding names, official-looking logos and federal addresses can be exploited to give questionable organisations an appearance of legitimacy.
