Trump Threatens Tariffs as EU Proposes Closer Partnership With Canada
US President Donald Trump has warned that the United States could impose heavy tariffs or restrict trade with Europe if the European Union moves ahead with plans for a deeper partnership with Canada. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed making Canada the EU’s first associate member during her State of the Union address in Strasbourg. The arrangement would expand cooperation on trade, defence, energy, technology, artificial intelligence, critical minerals and economic security. Trump described the proposal as laughable and said Washington’s response would depend on whether it viewed the initiative as hostile. Canada is seeking stronger economic and security ties with Europe as its trade tensions with the US continue. The associate membership proposal is still at an early stage and would require agreement from EU governments before any framework can be finalised.
