FG Begins Talks on New Minimum Wage as Labour Demands ₦500,000

The Federal Government says it has begun background discussions with stakeholders on a new national minimum wage as workers face rising living costs. The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Dr Kamil Shoretire, said no timetable has been set for formal negotiations. He added that details would be made public when talks reach the appropriate stage. The government is also engaging workers in sectors with unresolved disputes over salaries and allowances. Organised labour is seeking a review of the current ₦70,000 minimum wage approved in 2024, calling for ₦500,000, a wage award and a reduction in petrol prices to ₦500 per litre.
