PeacePro Calls for Probe Into Foreign Intelligence Influence Networks in Nigeria

PeacePro has called for a comprehensive investigation into possible foreign intelligence influence networks in Nigeria. The group said the probe should go beyond foreign funding of civil society organisations and media houses to examine relationships, information flows, access and influence linked to foreign interests. It stressed that foreign funding or engagement does not automatically amount to espionage. However, it said Nigerians should be able to question whether strategic interests may accompany fellowships, research partnerships, consultancies, sponsored campaigns, media engagements and personal relationships. The group proposed a national counter-intelligence awareness framework for journalists, academics, researchers, influencers, civil society actors and political leaders. It also urged the government to create confidential channels for citizens to report suspected attempts at manipulation or exploitation by foreign interests.
