Gumi Says More Islamic Scholars Could Have Helped Curb Banditry in North-West
Sheikh Ahmad Gumi says sustained engagement by credible Islamic scholars could have achieved more in efforts to curb banditry in North-West Nigeria. In a statement issued on Wednesday, he said preaching to bandits about the sanctity of life, property rights and Islam's prohibition of killing and oppression could complement military operations. Gumi argued that many bandits are products of ignorance, deprivation and long-standing social neglect. He said broader scholar-led outreach since 2021 might have reduced reliance on a predominantly kinetic response.
