Catholic Bishops Celebrate Rescue of Oriire Pupils, Call for Lasting Security
The Catholic Bishops of the Ibadan Province have welcomed the release of 44 pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire, Oyo State. They praised security agencies for securing their freedom but stressed this is only a first step. In a statement, the bishops urged federal and state authorities to provide trauma healing, medical care and counselling for the survivors and their families. They also appealed to journalists to respect the privacy of the rescued children and their teachers. The bishops called on communities to work with local vigilante groups and reminded government of its constitutional duty to protect lives and property. They insisted more must be done to end kidnappings and ensure lasting peace in affected areas.
