Jonathan Calls for Limits on Political Mobilisation During Off-Cycle Elections
I commend INEC, security agencies, political parties and the people of Osun State for the peaceful conduct of the recent governorship election. The outcome shows that Nigeria can conduct elections in ways that strengthen public confidence in democratic institutions. However, I am concerned about the growing practice of serving governors, senior government officials and party leaders arriving in large numbers, with heavy security details, in states holding off-cycle elections. Such mobilisation can create apprehension, intimidation and undue pressure on voters and opponents. Political parties have the right to campaign and mobilise supporters, but election-day conduct must have clear limits. I urge the National Peace Committee to convene political parties, INEC, security agencies, lawmakers, civil society, the NBA, governors and the media to agree on standards that protect free, fair and peaceful elections.
