Can an Igbo Candidate Build a Winning National Coalition?

I am Igbo, but I was born and raised in Northern Nigeria and have spent little time in the South-East. My experiences have often made my views different from those of many other Igbo people. I believe marginalisation is a real concern for many Igbos. However, I argue that addressing it requires political organisation, strategic alliances and sustained engagement across ethnic and religious lines rather than resentment alone. In my view, an Igbo presidential candidate can succeed only by building trust beyond the South-East, developing long-term national alliances and presenting a clear vision that speaks to voters across Nigeria. The experience of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s repeated campaigns shows how persistence and coalition-building can shape electoral success. I also believe the 2023 election remains deeply contested in public opinion. Rather than making broad judgments about any ethnic group or gender, the focus should be on how Nigerian leaders can build unity, accountability and a credible national platform.
