Nigerian Man Arrested for Touting Tourists in Tokyo’s Kabukicho District
Tokyo police have detained 53-year-old Nigerian national Nwadiukwu Ikenna on allegations of persistent touting in Kabukicho, one of the city’s busiest nightlife areas. Officers say he approached a passerby on July 9, grabbed their hand and repeatedly urged them into an establishment, saying “Why don’t you?” and “Don’t be scared. I love you.” Investigators report that Ikenna admitted receiving a share of fees from customers he referred to the venue. His arrest follows a spike in complaints about touting in the district, with 91 cases recorded in the first half of 2026 compared to 77 for all of 2025. Many victims have been foreign tourists forced to pay inflated charges, with total losses reaching about ¥100 million. One Australian visitor alone lost roughly ¥4 million. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police continue probing touting operations across Kabukicho.
