Gord Downie was a Canadian singer-songwriter, poet and activist best known as the lead vocalist and principal lyricist of rock band The Tragically Hip. Born in Ontario in 1964, he led the band from its formation in 1984 until his death in 2017. Alongside his work with The Tragically Hip, Downie released solo albums including Coke Machine Glow and the posthumous Away Is Mine. He also supported environmental causes and Indigenous reconciliation through projects such as Secret Path, which addressed Canada’s residential school history. Downie was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an incurable brain cancer, in 2015. He died in Toronto on October 17, 2017, aged 53.
