MTN-Mafab 5G Spectrum Talks Raise Competition Concerns

Talks about a possible transfer of Mafab Communications’ 5G spectrum to MTN Nigeria have revived questions about competition, network investment and consumer benefits. No agreement has been confirmed, and any transfer would require regulatory approval. MTN and Mafab each paid $273.6 million for 100MHz slots in the 3.5GHz band during the 2021 5G spectrum auction. MTN already serves about half of Nigeria’s mobile market, so acquiring Mafab’s allocation could strengthen its capacity, coverage and ability to handle rising data demand. Industry observers say the deal could improve service for MTN subscribers, but it may also place more pressure on Airtel, Globacom and other operators. Nigeria’s 5G adoption remains low at 4.74 per cent of mobile connections as of July 2026, while 4G still accounts for more than half of all connections.
