FG and Lagos Set Up Committees to Pursue 24-Hour Electricity Supply
The Federal Government and Lagos State have created two joint committees to work towards round-the-clock electricity supply in Lagos. The agreement was reached at a meeting at Lagos House, Marina. Power Minister Joseph Tegbe said Lagos was selected first because it accounts for an estimated 40% to 50% of Nigeria's electricity consumption. He said successful improvements could later be extended to other parts of the country. A Joint Technical Working Committee will address technical, legal and operational challenges affecting electricity supply. A Steering Committee, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu with Tegbe as co-chairman, will supervise implementation. The initiative is part of the Federal Government's 24/7 Energy Zones plan. Lagos is also developing its own electricity market under the Lagos State Electricity Law 2024 to reduce dependence on the national grid.
