After 66 Years, Is Nigeria’s Unity Still Working?
I did not watch President Tinubu’s October 1 national address. I felt there was little he could say that previous presidents have not said while the country continues to decline. Since 1966, Nigeria has faced coups, a civil war, military rule, corruption, human-rights abuses and political violence. To me, the cumulative effect is a country struggling with poverty, insecurity and weak institutions. I keep thinking about Ojukwu’s argument that independence was only the beginning of Nigeria’s journey towards becoming a real nation. After 66 years, I do not believe there is much to celebrate about unity if it has not delivered safety, prosperity or accountable leadership. I believe Nigerians should openly consider a peaceful referendum on the country’s future rather than continue defending an arrangement that many citizens see as unworkable.
