UNIBEN Launches Oba Erediauwa Memorial Lecture Series

The University of Benin has held a pre-launch event for the Oba Erediauwa Memorial Lecture Series, with historian Prof. Osarhieme Osadolor delivering the keynote address. The lecture, titled “Oba Erediauwa’s Voice in Discourse: Defining His Intellectual Legacy,” formed part of activities marking the 10th coronation anniversary of Oba Ewuare II. Osadolor said the late Oba’s writings, public service and defence of Benin traditions offer important lessons on leadership and governance. He traced Oba Erediauwa’s path from his legal education at the University of Cambridge and career in Nigeria’s public service to his reign as Oba of Benin from 1979 until his death in 2016. The lecturer highlighted the late monarch’s books and public interventions on governance, education, religion and the economy. UNIBEN Vice-Chancellor Prof. Edoba Omoregie said Oba Erediauwa’s autobiography and writings remain valuable historical resources, including for understanding Nigeria’s political development and the Civil War era.
