Zambian Auditor Found Dead in Apparent Suicide as Police Probe Abuse Allegation

A 46-year-old Zambian local government auditor, David Phiri, has died in an apparent suicide in Mambwe District, Eastern Province. Police said Phiri was found unresponsive at his plot on 26 July after residents reportedly heard screams from the area earlier that morning. Officers said there were no visible injuries, but they detected a strong chemical smell and found suspected maize-preservative tablets near his body. Authorities have ruled out foul play and said investigations are continuing. Unverified claims that Phiri allegedly sexually abused his 15-year-old housemaid before travelling to Mambwe have not been confirmed by police.
