Boko Haram’s Decline: From High-Profile Strikes to Hit-and-Run Raids
Many believed Boko Haram held firm control over parts of Nigeria. They once attacked high-profile prisons, freed their members, and ambushed a governor’s convoy. At one point, Maiduguri nearly fell to their forces. They hoisted their flag in 17 local government areas and maintained known bases. Today, none of those strongholds remain. The group now targets soft, unguarded locations and relies on hit-and-run raids rather than occupying territory. Most senior commanders have been neutralized, leaving only a handful of remnants. This shift suggests a significant decline in Boko Haram’s capacity to challenge government institutions.
