G100 Opposition Unity: Is Atiku Also Willing to Step Down?

I have been reflecting on a Yoruba proverb about deception as the G100 opposition-unity campaign gains attention. The campaign calls for a single opposition presidential candidate to challenge President Tinubu, but I believe Nigerians should ask who is leading the call for others to step down and who stands to benefit. Dr. Ladan Salihu has promoted the initiative in media appearances, yet he is also known to have supported Atiku Abubakar’s previous presidential bid. G100 convener Salihu Lukman has also been linked to political circles seen as sympathetic to Atiku. These connections do not prove a conspiracy, but they raise legitimate questions about whether the process is truly neutral. The concern grows when some ADC voices argue that only a northern candidate can defeat Tinubu, while Atiku already holds the party’s presidential ticket. If opposition figures are being urged to sacrifice their ambitions, the clearest test is whether Atiku is equally willing to step down for the strongest candidate. The key question is simple: is G100 searching for the strongest opposition candidate, or trying to persuade others to step down for Atiku? Nigerians should focus less on rumours about funding and more on the political incentives shaping the campaign.
