Tinubu Admits Hardship Persists, Promises Focus on Poverty Reduction
President Bola Tinubu says many Nigerian households still struggle with food, school fees, healthcare and transport costs despite recent economic reforms. In his Independence Day address, Tinubu said the hardship was rooted in decades of low productivity, weak infrastructure, limited opportunities and institutions that had not adequately served citizens. He said millions of Nigerians could not wait for relief. The President said his administration was moving from stabilising the economy to ensuring that growth improves daily life. He cited efforts to lower living costs, expand opportunities and extend social protection to vulnerable communities. The government points to stronger growth, foreign reserves and domestic refining capacity as signs of progress. However, Tinubu acknowledged that these gains have not yet translated into sufficient relief for many families.
