How Stevie Wonder’s “Happy Birthday” Helped Win MLK Day Recognition
Stevie Wonder’s 1980 song “Happy Birthday” was more than a celebration track. He wrote it to support the campaign for a United States public holiday in honour of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. After King’s assassination in 1968, proposals for a federal holiday faced years of resistance in Congress. Wonder used the song, released on his Hotter than July album, to renew public pressure on lawmakers. In 1981, he led the Rally for Peace and joined Coretta Scott King in presenting a petition with six million signatures. The holiday was signed into law in November 1983.
