IPMAN Warns Filling Stations to Halt Fuel Supply Amid Price Uncertainty

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) says uncertainty over petrol prices has forced many marketers to pause fresh purchases. Dangote Refinery suspended Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) loading four days ago, pushing marketers to private depots at ex-depot prices of ₦1,200–₦1,220 per litre, excluding transport costs. Several filling stations across Ibadan have closed as marketers wait for Dangote to resume sales. IPMAN insists there is no actual fuel scarcity but warns that continued price fluctuations could push pump rates even higher. Customers are urged not to panic buy. IPMAN’s Western Zone chairman expressed hope that normal supply will resume once Dangote Refinery resolves the loading suspension. He noted that private depots now sell PMS up to ₦1,250 per litre, while some marketers access product from other suppliers around ₦1,200 per litre.

I find it odd that private depots are now the main alternative so quickly after Dangote refinery paused supplies without clear timelines.

Are marketers not jumping the gun by halting purchases totally when some depots remain available for loading?

Perhaps marketers should spread procurement across multiple depots to reduce risk while awaiting official price confirmation from regulators.
