1 / 2

This rare photograph honours HRH Justina Okuakeleke Ntorka, the last Omu of Onicha-Olona. Born Justina Monyei, she assumed the royal name and responsibilities of the revered Omu stool after her coronation. Omu Ntorka succeeded HRH Ada Ifesimehone Amambiwemdi-Okoh, a prominent Omu remembered in Onicha-Olona’s modern history, including through accounts and oral traditions linked to the Nigerian Civil War. With Cynthia Nwamaka Jibunoh expected to be installed, the recent history of the Omu institution will be shaped by the legacies of Amambiwemdi-Okoh, Ntorka and Jibunoh. The photograph offers a valuable glimpse into the history of the community and its female royal leadership.
