EU Says Nigeria May Have World’s Largest Poor Population, Commits €45m in Aid
The European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, says Nigeria may have the world’s highest number of people living below the poverty line. He cited 2022 figures showing that 133 million Nigerians were living in multidimensional poverty, adding that conditions may have worsened. The EU has committed nearly €45 million in humanitarian assistance for Nigeria in 2026. The funding will focus on conflict-affected and crisis-prone communities, while supporting longer-term recovery and resilience programmes. Mignot said poverty reduction requires stronger social protection, better data on vulnerable households, and coordination between government, communities, civil society and development partners. He also noted that lasting progress depends on peace, security, dignity and respect for human rights.
