One Officer Dies, Two Wounded in Gunfight as Anambra Police Free Four Kidnap Victims
In a daring operation on May 10, the Anambra State Police Command stormed a kidnappers’ hideout in Obosi and rescued four victims, including the chief medical director of a local hospital. During the raid, operatives engaged in a fierce gun battle that left one officer dead and two others injured. Two suspected kidnappers were neutralised and authorities recovered a locally made pistol, 100 rounds of machine-gun ammunition, several expended cartridges and three vehicles, among them a silver Lexus RX 350 belonging to a rescued victim. The state government has pledged support for the fallen officer’s family and medical care for the wounded. In a separate clearance operation on May 7 in Orumba South, police disrupted plans by members of a proscribed group to regroup. They seized a cache of weapons — including machine guns, rocket launchers and improvised explosive devices — and arrested a suspected top commander. The command also announced the arrest of a cultism suspect and a woman accused of child trafficking, leading to the rescue of 12 children. The commissioner emphasized the force’s commitment to combating kidnapping, cultism, child trafficking and other violent crimes across the state.
