WhatsApp to Charge Nigerian Businesses for Some Customer Messages From October 2026
WhatsApp will begin charging businesses for certain customer-service messages sent through the WhatsApp Business Platform from October 1, 2026. The change affects companies using the WhatsApp Business API, not ordinary users or businesses using the standard WhatsApp Business app. Utility messages sent to Nigerian numbers will cost about $0.0101, roughly ₦14, per delivered message. Marketing messages will cost about $0.062, or roughly ₦84, each. A fintech sending 500,000 chargeable utility messages could pay about $5,050 in Meta fees before charges from other service providers. The new rates may raise operating costs for banks, fintechs, retailers, airlines, telecoms and small businesses that use WhatsApp for customer support, payment confirmations, order updates and sales. Businesses will need to monitor message volume and decide which interactions require the platform.
