Why New Asian Tech Brands Struggle to Earn Nigerian Consumers’ Trust
More Asian electronics brands are entering Nigeria and other African markets, but visibility does not always translate into sales. Many buyers may discover a phone or gadget online, then visit Computer Village or a local retailer to inspect it and ask questions before paying. For expensive devices, trust matters as much as price. Consumers want honest reviews, reliable battery and camera tests, genuine products, accessible spare parts, clear warranties and service centres that can handle faults. Counterfeit products have also made buyers cautious about unfamiliar brands. This is why local tech reviewers, word-of-mouth recommendations and a visible physical retail presence can be more convincing than repeated adverts. Brands such as Tecno, Infinix and Itel gained ground by responding to local realities, including long battery life, dual-SIM use and camera performance. New entrants must understand that African consumers want value, quality and dependable after-sales support, not simply the lowest price.
