How to Report Police Extortion in Nigeria and Protect Yourself
If a police officer demands money to release you, drop an allegation, let you pass or carry out an official duty, document the incident as safely as possible. Note the date, time, location, officer’s name, rank, service number, station and any patrol vehicle details. Keep relevant evidence, such as transfer records, receipts, messages, call logs, photographs or videos. Do not endanger yourself or confront an armed officer simply to gather proof. Report the matter to the Nigeria Police Force’s Complaint Response Unit or the Police Service Commission. State clearly what was demanded, who made the demand, what happened afterwards and whether any money or benefit was given. Keep screenshots, reference numbers and dates of every follow-up. A complaint is an allegation that must be investigated. If you face threats or immediate danger, move to a safe place first and seek legal or emergency support. Knowing how to report misconduct is part of protecting your rights.
