Nigerian Paramedic Sentenced to 12 Years for Assaulting Teen Patient in US Ambulance
A Mecklenburg County jury has convicted 34-year-old paramedic Akingbiwaju Opadele of sexually assaulting a teenage patient while transporting her to a hospital in the United States. Prosecutors said the teenager had suffered a seizure at school on 17 January 2023 and was being taken by ambulance to a children’s hospital when the assault occurred. The victim reported it after arriving at the hospital, leading to an investigation and Opadele’s arrest. He was sentenced to 144 months in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for 30 years. The case is a reminder of the need for strong safeguards for vulnerable patients in the care of medical personnel.
