Peter Obi’s Anambra Record: What Counts as Debt and Liability?
Peter Obi has maintained that he left Anambra State without debt, while his handover records have been cited as showing substantial assets alongside estimated liabilities of about ₦5 billion. The key issue is whether “no debt” refers only to public borrowing, or whether it also excludes unpaid obligations such as certified contractor invoices, pension arrears and other liabilities. Having cash or investments does not automatically erase money owed. A proper assessment should show both sides of the state’s balance sheet: the assets Anambra held and the liabilities it owed at the end of the administration. These are different accounting questions and should be addressed clearly. I am tired of the continued argument over Peter Obi’s financial record. The debate needs clear figures and definitions, not changing interpretations of what debt means.
