Bamako Under Siege: Mali Enforces Nightly Curfew After Deadly Attacks
Mali’s capital has been placed under a strict curfew from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. for the next 72 hours. The measure began on April 25 as security forces stepped up operations across Bamako and nearby areas. Jihadist fighters and separatist groups launched coordinated assaults that left at least 16 people injured. The army says it “neutralised” several hundred attackers, though clashes continued in some districts. Explosions and gunfire rang out near Kati, Modibo Keita International Airport and other strategic sites. Unverified reports suggested the Defence Minister’s residence in Kati was targeted during the assaults. Resilience has been tested after Mali’s decade-long insurgency. Residents have been urged to stay indoors as the military administration, led by General Assimi Goïta, struggles to fully contain armed groups ahead of delayed elections.
