Auditor-General Queries N33.75bn Cash Transfers to 3.29m Households
The Auditor-General of the Federation says the National Cash Transfer Office could not provide sufficient records to verify that N33.75 billion transferred to more than 3.29 million households in 2023 reached genuine beneficiaries. The audit report said payment vouchers lacked complete beneficiary details, while Remita records needed to reconcile payments with the National Social Register and National Beneficiary Register were not made available. It added that accounts officials obstructed efforts to access the records. The report raised eight audit queries involving billions of naira, including N36.74 billion in payments allegedly made without prepayment audit checks and N4.62 billion in payments without supporting vouchers. It recommended that unaccounted funds be explained to the National Assembly or recovered and returned to the Treasury. The findings add to concerns over Nigeria’s social intervention programme, which was expanded after the removal of petrol subsidy. The cash-transfer scheme has previously faced allegations of mismanagement and calls for transparent beneficiary and payment records.
