Living With Sickle Cell Made Me Afraid to Tell the Woman I Loved
I have lived with sickle cell since childhood, and it has shaped my health, friendships and confidence in relationships. I was bullied at school and often felt isolated, but I still hoped I could find someone who would see me beyond my condition. In a past relationship, my partner became distant after learning more about the complications of sickle cell and the uncertainty it could bring. That experience made me start hiding my symptoms and diagnosis from the next woman I loved. When I eventually told her the truth after months of dating, she said she needed time to process it. She later ended the relationship, saying she could not picture a future filled with worry about my health. The heartbreak has been painful, but I am learning that honesty matters and that I can still have a full, beautiful life with sickle cell.
