An Open Letter Calling on Ibrahim Babangida to Address Nigeria’s Unresolved Wounds

Dear General Ibrahim Babangida, I write on behalf of Nigerians who still live with the consequences of your years in power. Questions over public funds, including oil revenue linked to the Gulf War windfall, remain unresolved for many citizens. If you have information about money that was lost or diverted, Nigerians deserve the truth and, where possible, restitution. The annulment of the June 12, 1993 election remains one of the gravest setbacks in Nigeria’s democratic history. A clear acknowledgment of the harm caused, and an unambiguous apology to the Nigerian people, would be a meaningful step toward accountability. Families affected by detention, disappearance and death during that era also deserve answers. The killing of journalist Dele Giwa was never resolved through a criminal conviction, but it remains a painful symbol of the dangers faced by critics of military rule. Nigeria cannot fully heal without truth, acknowledgment and justice for those who suffered.
