FBI: US Violent Crime Fell 9.3% in 2025, Largest Drop Since 1936

Violent crime in the United States fell by 9.3% in 2025, according to newly released FBI estimates. The agency said this was the largest year-on-year decline since it began compiling national crime estimates in 1936. Murders and non-negligent manslaughter dropped by 18.1%, while robbery fell by 18.5%. Rape declined by 7.6% and aggravated assault by 7.2%. The murder rate fell to 4.1 per 100,000 people, its lowest level in decades. Property crime also dropped by 12.4%, with motor-vehicle theft down 22.7%. The FBI attributed the improvement to stronger cooperation among federal, state, local and tribal law-enforcement agencies. The estimates were compiled from reports submitted by more than 17,000 law-enforcement agencies, covering nearly 97% of the US population.
