Nigeria Sets Conditions for Backing Next UN Secretary-General Candidate

Vice President Kashim Shettima says Nigeria will support a candidate for the next United Nations Secretary-General who advances Africa’s interests, multilateral cooperation and reforms to give the continent a stronger voice. At a meeting in New York with Costa Rican candidate Rebeca Grynspan, Shettima said Nigeria’s decision would be guided by equity, justice, fairness, gender inclusion and Africa’s aspirations. He renewed Nigeria’s call for permanent African representation on the UN Security Council. Grynspan said she would support reforms sought by countries in the Global South and prioritise peace. In a separate meeting, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands offered expertise to support Nigeria’s financial inclusion efforts, including insurance, credit guarantees and data generation for vulnerable groups.
