Former Osun Council Chair Sues Police, Seeks ₦500m Over Wanted Declaration
Babajide Jooda, a former caretaker chairman of Irewole Local Government Area in Osun State, has filed a fundamental rights suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja over his declaration as a wanted person. Jooda is seeking ₦250 million in general damages and ₦250 million in exemplary damages. He alleges that the declaration, arrest warrant and related police publications caused him embarrassment, intimidation and reputational damage. He was previously arrested in connection with the alleged murder of reinstated Irewole council chairman Remi Abass. Jooda says the police later withdrew or amended charges in which he was named, yet still declared him wanted over allegations including terrorism, unlawful possession of firearms and culpable homicide. He further alleges that the court order said to have authorised the wanted publication was forged and that the action was politically motivated. The case is now before the Federal High Court for determination.
