Tinubu May Have Been Better Prepared for the Presidency in 2015

I am not a Tinubu supporter, but I believe his political influence is central to Nigeria’s current debate. He built a formidable political structure, supported the rise of several leaders and helped turn a long-running opposition movement into a governing party. In my view, Nigeria might have benefited more if Tinubu had become president in 2015 rather than Buhari. His older speeches showed confidence, political experience and a stronger ability to articulate ideas without relying heavily on prepared remarks. However, I believe the Tinubu leading Nigeria today is diminished and unable to effectively oversee a country of this size. While some current policies may not be directly his own, he chose to seek the presidency after what I consider his strongest years had passed. The informal zoning arrangement among Nigeria’s political elite may have delayed his ambition, but it does not erase his responsibility for running when he did. He spent years building people and political structures, yet his presidency is now struggling to meet the expectations many Nigerians had.
