Prisoner Escapes Custody Van, Fatally Struck by Train Near Welwyn North
A man in his 40s died after fleeing a contracted prison transport van and being hit by a train near Welwyn North railway station. He was on his way to court when an altercation inside the van left two custody officers injured and allowed him to break free. Police and British Transport authorities launched a search immediately. About 40 minutes later, the man was found dead on the tracks. Formal identification is pending, but his family has been notified. Two injured security staff were taken to hospital. Hertfordshire Police has referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, and train services including Thameslink and LNER faced hours of delays during recovery and investigation efforts.
