Milei Renews Argentina’s Falklands Claim, Threatens Sanctions Over Oil Projects
Argentine President Javier Milei has renewed Argentina’s claim to the Falkland Islands, known locally as the Malvinas, and announced tougher economic and diplomatic measures against activities carried out there without approval from Buenos Aires. In a national address, Milei said the islands were historically and legally Argentine territory. He rejected the Falkland Islanders’ right to self-determination and warned companies involved in projects around the islands, including the Sea Lion offshore oilfield, that they could face restrictions on doing business in Argentina. Britain continues to administer the Falklands as a British Overseas Territory, while residents have repeatedly voted to remain under British sovereignty. The dispute has persisted for decades, including the 1982 war that ended with Argentina’s surrender and the restoration of British control. Milei said Argentina would seek stronger legal powers to impose sanctions and urged allied countries, including the United States, to support Buenos Aires’ sovereignty claim.
