Nigerian Politicians’ Wealth: Why Asset Declarations and Verification Matter

Nigeria’s political class is often associated with luxury cars, large homes and lifestyles far removed from the daily struggles of many citizens. The key question is not whether every wealthy politician is corrupt, but whether their wealth can be traced to legitimate and documented sources. Public officers are required to declare their assets and liabilities when they assume office, leave office and at set intervals during continuous public service. These declarations should cover property, bank accounts, investments and business interests. The Code of Conduct Bureau is responsible for receiving, examining and verifying them. A politician may have built wealth through business, professional work, investments or inheritance before entering office. Wealth alone is not proof of wrongdoing. However, where assets grow sharply during public service, citizens deserve clear explanations, proper records and credible verification. Stronger transparency would help Nigerians separate legitimate success from unexplained enrichment. The size of a politician’s mansion or convoy is not evidence on its own. The real evidence is the paper trail behind the wealth.
