Chinese Men Seeking African Wives Face Rising Matchmaking Scams

China’s shortage of women has pushed some men to seek partners abroad, including in African countries such as Madagascar and Malawi. Criminal networks are exploiting the demand by promising marriages in exchange for money. In a recent case in Madagascar, police stopped a young woman from boarding a flight to China after she was allegedly promised about $2,300 to marry a Chinese man. Four suspects were arrested, while investigators reportedly recovered forged documents and passports belonging to Malagasy women. Authorities fear similar networks may have sent other women abroad through deceptive arrangements. While some men lose money in fraudulent matchmaking deals, women may face coercion, document fraud and possible trafficking. Chinese embassies in Africa have urged citizens to be cautious of unverified cross-border marriage brokers.
