Foreign-Owned Shops Looted, Cars Burned During Soweto Protests
Foreign-owned shops were looted and several vehicles were burned during protests in Soweto, Johannesburg, over demands that local businesses should be owned and operated by South Africans. Protesters associated with Soweto Uprising 2026 entered a spaza shop on Thursday night and removed goods. Although some said they were taking the items outside for the owner to retrieve, later footage reportedly showed people leaving with the goods. Authorities described the incidents as criminal activity and said police had been deployed. Shop owners were moved to safety, with no injuries reported. Similar unrest was reported in Durban, where police used tear gas and at least 11 vehicles were burned.
