INEC Says AI Will Support, Not Decide, Nigeria’s 2027 Election Results

INEC says artificial intelligence will be used to support the conduct of the 2027 general election, while Nigerians will remain solely responsible for deciding who wins through their votes. The commission said AI could help with election logistics, result checks and cybersecurity. The tools may help identify inconsistencies, detect possible digital threats and improve planning for the movement of personnel and sensitive materials. INEC stressed that AI will not replace the established procedures for collation, verification and declaration of results. Any technology deployed must be tested, secure, transparent and subject to human oversight under electoral laws.
