Lagos, Belonging and the Need for Ethnic Restraint
I believe Lagos can be both the historic homeland of its indigenous Yoruba communities and a Nigerian city where residents from every background live, work and participate peacefully. Cosmopolitan life should not erase history, just as ancestry should not be used to deny law-abiding residents dignity or safety. Debates over residency, indigeneship, university fees and political representation should be handled through the law, credible facts and democratic institutions. Claims of ethnic ownership or political conquest can easily deepen suspicion and expose ordinary people to harm. The 2023 elections and Nigeria’s history show why leaders and citizens must reject inflammatory rhetoric. Every resident deserves protection, while disagreements about rights, identity and representation should be addressed without threats, collective blame or violence.
