Niger Seeks Nigerian Port Access as Dispute With Benin Disrupts Trade Routes
Niger Republic is seeking closer trade cooperation with Nigeria as its prolonged border dispute with Benin Republic disrupts access to key international trade routes. A Nigerien Customs delegation recently met with the Nigeria Customs Service in Abuja to discuss using the Kamba corridor for legitimate imports and exports. The officials said insecurity on routes through Burkina Faso and Togo, alongside tensions with Benin, has increased pressure on border communities and government revenue. Niger had relied heavily on Benin's Port of Cotonou before relations worsened after the 2023 military coup in Niamey. The dispute has since affected cross-border trade, oil exports, pipeline operations and security cooperation. Benin's new government has indicated interest in rebuilding trust with Niger, but major political and security disagreements remain.
